As reported by Litchfield.bz...U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal stopped Brookside Farm II in Litchfield on Friday to sample the farm's maple syrup and express his support for the maple syrup producing business.
Blumenthal met with the farm's owners, Mark Harran and Kay Carroll, to explain his commitment to forcing large food corporations to discontinue their practice of advertising foods as being flavored by real maple syrup when in truth they are flavored by sugar or high fructose corn syrup. The practice, according to Blumenthal, puts producers like Harran and Carroll at a disadvantage in the marketplace because consumers are duped into thinking products like oatmeal, cereal and ice cream have maple syrup in their ingredients. The practice, the senator said, is one of deception, fraud and misrepresentation. Blumenthal and Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy have co-authored a letter to the Food and Drug Administration demanding action against corporations for product mislabeling. The letter went out on Thursday. Richard Blumenthal visited Brookside Farm II on Friday afternoon as he and congressional colleagues urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to “crack down” on the labeling on maple-branded products, which often times do not actually contain maple.
The senator was given a tour of the syrup-making operation at the farm by Mark Harran, the owner of the property and the president of the Maple Syrup Producers Association of Connecticut. Read MORE |
